Corporator’s threat to the President of Lok Raj Samiti

The residents of Harkesh Nagar Ward of Sanjay Colony held street corner meetings on December 23, 2007 to condemn the threats of beating and economic damage by the corporator against the President of the Lok Raj Samiti.

The first street corner meeting was held in the E-block of Sanjay Colony. Addressing the people who had gathered there, Renu Nayak reported that on December 22 at 8:30 a.m the local corporator, along with his supporters approached and threatened to thrash Amarjeet Kumar for filing a request for information under the Right to Information Act on the public toilets there. They also threatened to withdraw the MCD license for his father’s handcart used for hawking his merchandise.

Lokesh Kumar, Secretary of the Samiti, pointed out that it was a matter of great shame, not only for the corporator and MLA but also for the Chief Minister, that there were no toilets available for the women and girls of Sanjay Colony in the country’s capital city in the 21st century. He said that in the last two years they had contacted the Chief Minister, local MLA and the corporator (present and erstwhile) but to no avail.

During a similar campaign in the F-block, people expressed their unhappiness and said that “any condemnation of the corporator is too little; it is clear that he is acting to block any move to get the toilets organized here.”

Commenting on the corporator’s statement that “ when I have spent lakh of rupees to get elected, I will have to recoup my expenditure,” the Delhi Secretary of Lok Raj Sangathan quipped that the meager funds received for the development of the area are appropriated by these “representatives” as interest on their election expenses.

Concluding the campaign in the B-block, Amarjeet Kumar vowed that the Lok Raj Samiti would not be cowed down by any threats and will continue to wage the struggle to safeguard the interests of the residents of Sanjay Colony
