Syria and Venezuela oppose US hegemony
The presidents of Syria and Venezuela, meeting in Damascus at the end of August 2006, assured their citizens and the peoples of the world that their governments are firmly united against the aggression and hegemonic intentions of US imperialism.
The visit of President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela to Syria took place against the backdrop of the US – backed Israeli aggression in Lebanon and Palestine. Israel and US imperialism have been intimidating Syria and Iran for their support to the Lebanese and Palestinian people.
The government of Venezuela was outspoken in its condemnation of the Israeli aggression. President Chávez said “Venezuela and Syria are two courageous nations; we are not afraid to tell it like it is.” He sharply pointed out that the purpose of his visit to Syria was to convert their common perspectives into effective action, and to coordinate their policies effectively at a higher level. Syrian President Bashar Al Assad said that Venezuela and Syria shared many common positions on international issues, and in particular they both rejected hegemony and the unilateral power of the United States. He also commended President Chávez for his support to the peoples whose rights are denied and whose territories are occupied.
The unequivocal stands taken by governments like those of Venezuela and Syria, spanning different and far continents, against the hegemonic designs of US imperialism assume great importance in the world today, in which US imperialism is putting immense pressure on all countries, big and small, to toe its line or else face punishment. It is an obstacle to the aggressive plans of US imperialism.
